SALTWATER FISHING: Light Tackle Fishing for Striped Bass

By Brandon White. In the last article we covered a general overview of light tackle fishing for striped bass. Here in part two we’ll dive in deeper and talk about the rods I use on my striped bass light tackle-fishing adventures. What I use is certainly not the only thing you can use, but I’ll lay it all out for you to use as a guide of a general idea where to start. We can break down the characteristics for the purposes of this article into: Action, Power, Graphite, the types of Guides, Rod Length, Number of Pieces and Type of Rod. Let’s look at each one of these and within each one talk about the attributes I use for my light tackle striper fishing. Action You can think about action in terms of how far down the rod the rod bends when...

Rare fish found in Northland dive site

Lindy Laird   Something Fishy: It's rarely seen in New Zealand waters, but is it a unicorn triggerfish or a scribbled leatherjacket? Charlie Mcvicar Northland's marine reserves, wrecks and reefs are increasingly becoming home to fish species from sub-tropical waters. Five new or rarely seen species have been spotted at east coast dive spots during the past two months but the latest has scientists differing on whether it's a scribbled leatherjacket or a unicorn triggerfish. The rare fish was captured on film last week at the Canterbury wreck near Deep Water Cove, Bay of Islands. It joins a list of recently seen yellow boxfish, black-spot goatfish, eyestripe surgeon fish, two-tone wrasse and damsel fish. Northland Dive partner Julia Riddle posted the photo taken by Charlie McVicar on Wade Doak's website discussion forum to try to find out whether the 50cm fish was a triggerfish or leatherjacket. Te Papa marine biologist Andrew Stewart thought the long dorsal ...

21-Pound Lobster Caught at Nauset Beach, Cape Cod

by Gayne C. Young Something odd is going on over at Nauset Beach near Cape Cod. Last week a 14-foot great white was spotted cruising the shallows after kayakers. This week the depths brought forth a 21-pound lobster. So just how large is a 21-pound ocean bug. Elise Costa, manager of Capt’n Elmers restaurant where the lobster is being held explained it to WBZ this way , “I had its tail on my shoulder and I had each claw in one of my hands, and it was as long as my arms and as big as my torso. It’s giant.” Costa went on to detail just how much meat a beast such as that could produce. “Usually, for every four and a half pounds of live lobster, once you cook it and clean it, you get one pound of meat. So 21 divided by four and a half, that would give you about five pounds of meat,” said Costa. You'll need a lot of butter. Although a 27-pound lobster was caught off the coast of Maine in February, such large crustaceans are becoming a rarity as more and more lobster fisherm...

Hoa Binh’s farmer catches strange fish with “snake head, pig tongue”

VietNamNet Bridge - A farmer in the northern province of Hoa Binh caught a fish with a strange shape several days ago. Leading experts on freshwater fish said it could be an Ophicephalidae snakehead. Early this week, Mr. Bui Van Nguyen, a resident of Don Village in My Hoa commune, Tan Lac district found an exotic fish under the mud while pumping water from a spring. "The fish is very strong so I had to ask for help from my two neighbors. It took us 30 minutes to take the fish to the shore," Nguyen said. The unknown catfish has a snake head while its body and tail look like an eel. It is 1.14m long and 4.2 kg in weight. The weird thing is that it has a pig tongue. Many people in Don Village said they had never seen such a fish. Dr. Nhezdoli, an expert of ichthyology, from the Vietnam-Russia Tropical Center, was very surprised when he saw the picture of this strange fish. However, the world's leading expert on freshwater fish guessed that the fish may belong to the Ophicep...

An Amazing Cabo Tale of a 300-Pound Mystery Fish

by Doug Olander courtesy Joe Estrada Huge louvar nearly fills the transom of the charter boat, with a 9-foot beam. What began as an incredibly unlikely capture of one of the world’s rarest fish just kept getting weirder for angler Joe Estrada of San Antonio, with whom I caught up via phone recently. Just after sunup on Thursday, November 1, not far off Cabo’s famed arch, Estrada and two buddies — Wayne Tauer and Greg Graham, also from San Antonio — were headed offshore on Dr. Pescado II, when something not right caught their eye. As they drew near to something at the surface, they began to make out what seemed an impossible shape -- longer than a man, a fish shaped remotely like a mahi but looking far different was swimming in circles. The bright red/orange/pink fish was like nothing they had ever seen. The anglers learned later that their prize was a louvar . Louvars inhabit warm seas around the world, generally living in deep ocean waters near the surface where they feed on jellyfis...

Prehistoric fish the first to grow a set of teet

Nicky Phillips Say No To Gaps & Dentures. Get More Info About Dental Implants Here. Big bite ... a sculptured reconstruction of the placoderm. Photo: Esben Horn Scientists have found fossil evidence of the first animal to grow a set of pearly whites — a prehistoric fish that lived more than 380 million years ago. An international research team discovered teeth in several specimens of an ancient fish species, known as placoderms, a finding that likely represents the origins of teeth and jaws in animals. A full set of chompers has been key to the success of most top predators. One of the group's researchers, Kate Trinajstic, from Western Australia's Curtin University, said the development of teeth meant placoderms, which were covered in plates of bony armour, could become a top predator who ruled the oceans for more than 70 million years. Underwater alien inspiration

Some of New Zealand's freshwater wildlife looks as though it just stepped off the set of Starship Troopers . Dragonfly larvae. First is this impressive looking dragonfly larva . When we were kids we had a creek out the back of our house in Twizel. We spent hours and hours playing and exploring out there, and one day I thought I had discovered a new species upon finding several dragonfly larvae under the rocks in the streambed. Of course, it was not a new species of animal, but I have remained fond of these incredible little aquatic predators ever since. Coolest thing? They have extendable jaws that fold back into their head! The feathery gills of the burrowing mayfly. Burrowing mayflies do just as their name suggests, burrowing into the gravelly substrate in riverbeds and eating the organic detritus that gathers there. The beautiful white feathers of the burrowing mayfly remind me of Falcor, that lovable dragon in The Neverending Story. Apart from being awesome looking, freshwater...

Century-old fish found off Alaska

An ear bone containing growth rings helped determine age A commercial fishing boat has caught what may have been one of the oldest creatures in Alaska - a giant rock-fish thought to be about 100 years old.The 44in (1.1m), 60lb (27kg) female shortraker rock-fish was hauled in by a Seattle-based vessel, trawling for pollack in the Bering Sea last month.Scientists estimate the fish was between 90 and 115 years old.The fish was brought up from a depth of 2,100ft (640m), south of the Pribilof Islands, AP news agency reported.Reproductive potentialThe discovery was made by the crew of the Kodiak Enterprise, owned by Trident Seafoods, when they pulled up an estimated 75 tons of pollack and 10 rock-fish in March. The huge specimen was handed over to scientists at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center in Seattle where it was measured, photographed and documented. The age of the fish was determined by removing an ear bone, known as the otolith, which contains growth rings similar to those in tree t...
